Playing the blinds

So many players fall victim to playing a hand in the blinds simply because they already have a small amount of money in the pot. This is a horrible mindset to be in when you are on one of the blinds.

When you are in the blinds you are in the worst position possible because for the rest of the hand everyone has position on you. You will have to make the first action in every following street and you will have to do so without knowing what your opponent will do.

This makes it very hard to put your opponent on a range of hands because you have to act first. This puts you at a big disadvantage in the hand which you don't want.

Correct plays from the blinds

One of the times that it is correct to play your blinds more liberally is whenever you are the big blind and everyone folds except for the small blind who limps in.

Whenever an opponent limps into your big blind you should punish them for making a weak play and you should take advantage of having position on them. You should raise them up to about four times the big blind.

This will normally take the pot down because your opponent will have a weak hand otherwise they would have raised themselves.

By limping in they are signaling to you that their hand is weak and that they don't really like its strength. They have a little money in the pot already so they think that it's alright to limp in. You need to steal this money from them as often as you can.

Another situation that you should be playing your blinds more liberally in is whenever you have an aggressive opponent on the button when you are in the blinds. Whenever you realize your opponent is trying to steal the blinds regularly you need to open up more often and reraise this opponent to show them that they are not allowed to steal your blinds.

You don't want to constantly compete against them for the pot, but you want to take their raise from them enough to break even or make a little bit compared to the number of times that you let them steal it. This is important because if you don't at least break even against this opponent you are allowing them to simply grind your money away from you by being aggressive.

The most important part of playing the blinds is simple. Don't play the blinds more often than necessary or when you have a strong hand.

The simple fact that you are in the worst position possible makes it an easy fold when someone raises. It is hard enough to play winning poker. You need to see what your opponent does to play the hand to its maximum potential so being out of position against your opponents just makes the hand harder for you to play.

Make sure that you are only playing a very tight close range of hands from the blinds unless you are contesting an aggressive opponent or stealing from the small blind limping into your big blind. Other than these situations, you should stay away from playing the worst position possible.
