Whenever you take an action in poker your action should be taken for a specific reason and should be taken in an aggressive manner if possible.
Any time that you open up a pot by simply calling the big blind you are making one of the worst plays possible in poker. Whenever you open up a pot by limping (open limping), you are giving your opponents better odds to make a play at the pot, you are taking an action that makes you look weak, and you are not showing any aggression. All of these are very big "no-nos" of poker and should never take place in your poker game.
Before anyone makes any bets or calls there is a small blind and a big blind at stake in the pot. Whenever you bet at the pot you are taking your shot at taking down those blinds and possibly go up against any opponent who wants to call your raise. By making this bet you are forcing aggression on your opponents and making them pay more for their chance at the pot.
Whenever you limp in you are just adding to the amount of blinds that are in the middle because, you aren't making it anything more for your opponents to call than it was originally. If there is a $0.50 small blind and a $1 big blind in the pot and you limp in, there will be $2.50 in the pot. You got 150% odds on your money when you called and you are instantly giving your opponent almost twice the odds that you had to call.
There is nothing worse than looking weak on a poker table. Whenever you take an action that makes you look weak not only will the random bad players pick up on it, but good players will peg you as a fish and will start bullying you like crazy. Whenever you show any sort of weakness the good players who have trained hard attack it and take your money.
By letting yourself get pegged as a fish your strong opponents are going to make it very hard for you to get by at the table. You want it to be clear to the other strong players that you are a strong player yourself and that your role at the table is taking money from the fish, not being the fish.
Open limping is the complete opposite of being aggressive which you always want to do in poker. Whenever you start to play in any sort of style other than being aggressive you are playing incorrectly.
You want to maximize your chances at winning the pot and playing aggressive adds the ability of your opponent folding to the equation. This is an extra opportunity that you have to take down the pot (called fold equity) and you should most definitely take it.
Open limping is bad and you should almost never do it.
Instead of open limping, start raising to three and a half to four times the big blind. Whenever you see an opponent open limps into a pot, you should attack the pot because there is dead money in it. Open limping says "I like my hand, but not enough to put extra money in the pot." Take advantage of this and punish weak opponents for open limping.
